Angela Lee Says She Would Love To Fight Michelle Waterson
Angela Lee is the undisputed queen of the ONE Championship atomweight division. At just 23 years old, ‘Unstoppable remains unbeaten at that weight class and has already defended her belt four times.
The only two losses of Lee’s career have come at strawweight. And while her number one goal remains to win the ONE strawweight title, Angela also has another goal, to face UFC’s Michelle Waterson.
Speaking to Bloody Elbow, Lee said she would be honour to fight Waterson.
“I think that would be an awesome fight. I think the fans would definitely love it,” Lee said. “I haven’t met Michelle in person but I follow her on Instagram and I love her story and what she represents. I would love to meet her one day and it would be an honour to fight her as well. I think it would be a great fight.”
Lee won her title back in 2016 by defeating Mei Yamaguchi. A year later, Angela called for a cross-promotion fight with the then UFC strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
At the time, Waterson commented that Lee would needed to prove herself, before challenging the UFC champion.
Lee later responded to Waterson’s comments in an interview with MMA Junkie.
“I think a lot of the UFC fighters and a lot of the girls that come over to Singapore, they like to talk a lot. That’s what they’re supposed to do, because they’re with a different organisation,” Lee said at the time. “But if you were to put us inside the cage together, I think it would be a different story.”
Since then, we have seen Demetrious Johnson, Eddie Alvarez and Sage Northcutt make the move to the Singapore based promotion and had mixed results. And Lee believes this proves the quality of athletes on the ONE Championship roster.
“No one ever knows how a fight is going to turn out until it happens. Each promotion does a great job of promoting their fighters, but no one really knows how the fighters would match-up. You only see them in their own promotion. That’s what everybody is so curious about.”
