UFC Look Set To Move May 23rd Card, Dana Talks Khabib vs Gaethje

The UFC initially targeted May 23rd for the event headlined by the former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and the number six ranked Gilbert Burns. But according to the sources provided by MMA Junkie, the card will be moved to May 30th.

The location is still uncertain, although Dana White has been mentioning the UFC APEX in Las Vegas as a possible venue for some future cards. But first, the Nevada Athletic Commission would need to re-start sanctioning events after the COVID-19 shutdown. It is also unknown whether or not all of the announced bouts will be moved to May 30th, but the sources claim that at least two of them will.

Moreover, Dana told ESPN (transcript by MMA Mania) that he is working on the fight between the lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and the interim belt holder Justin Gaethje, which should take place on the Fight Island, this summer.

“I expect [Khabib vs Gaethje] to happen this summer. I don’t know if it will be the first one but it will be on ‘Fight Island’ unless miraculously the world comes back together faster than I think it’s gonna,” Dana stated.

Khabib was initially set to defend his 155-pound title against Tony Ferguson, but was unable to leave Russia in order to compete due to the coronavirus restrictions at the time. Nevertheless, Gaethje stepped in, defeated ‘El Cucuy’ via TKO, and captured the lightweight interim belt at UFC 249 this past weekend.

While the UFC is looking to make Khabib vs Gaethje as soon as possible, former UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, has been trying to muscle in on the conversation. The Irishman has been trading shots with half of the 155lbs division in the last two days.

With Justin Gaethje set to take on Khabib Nurmagomedov in a lightweight unification bout this summer, who would you like to see Conor McGregor face?
