Aung La Nsang Discusses Training With Usman & Burns Ahead Of UFC 251

Two-division ONE champion Aung La Nsang admits that things have been ‘a little awkward’ at Sanford MMA, where two of his teammates are set to fight each other on the world stage. Kamaru Usman is set to defend his UFC welterweight title against Gilbert Burns at UFC 251 next month on UFC Fight Island.

Speaking on the South China Morning Post‘s Post Fight Podcast, Aung La described the atmosphere at Sanford MMA, ahead of the clash between friends and teammates, Usman and Burns.

“There’s no drama. Sometimes they work in separate areas, but it’s something they chose to do. It’s a little awkward, but it’s OK,” Aung La said.

While Aung La admits it’s been a little awkward in the gym, he wishes them both the best of luck.

“It’s awkward, but it is what it is – they’re just trying to provide for their families. They’re both my friends and they’re both great teammates, so I wish them the best.”

While Aung La refused to give a prediction, the Myanmar superstar did say that he thinks both Usman and Burns are exciting to watch. The ONE middleweight and light heavyweight champion went on to say that when you train at one of the best gyms in the world, there’s always a chance that you may end up having to face a teammate.

“Yeah, it’s bound to happen [teammates fighting] if you have really good guys at the same weight class,” the 35-year-old champion said. “If you have like eight to ten really good guys in the welterweight division, and a lot of them are ranked, it’s bound to happen, so it is what it is.”

Since Aung La Nsang spoke to SCMP, Usman has confirmed that he has moved his training camp from Florida to Denver. There, he will train with Trevor Wittman, who is known for his work with Justin Gaethje and Rose Namajunas.

Who do you think walks out as the UFC welterweight champion after UFC 251, Kamaru Usman or Gilbert Burns?
