Canelo Alvarez On Fighting Jorge Masvidal: Why Not?

Jorge Masvidal started 2019 having not fought in over a year and on a two fight losing skid. The 35 year old will however go into 2020 with the world at his feet, after scoring three huge wins in the past twelve months. After his most recent win against Nate Diaz at UFC 244, ‘Gamebred’ told the post fight press conference that he wanted to fight Canelo Alvarez in a boxing contest.

When asked by TMZ Sports about Masvidal’s comments, Canelo pointed out that they compete in two different sports.

“It’s two different sports. It’s like if I was going into MMA, it’s two different worlds, boxing and MMA, MMA and boxing.”

However, when asked if he would entertain the idea of fighting Masvidal inside a boxing ring, the multi-division boxing world champion responded by saying that he was open to the idea.

“For business, why not?”

Since calling out Canelo, Masvidal has also called out Floyd Mayweather, who last month announced that he and UFC president Dana White would be doing business together in 2020.

Canelo was also asked by TMZ Sports about fighting Mayweather again, having lost to him six years ago in 2013, in the only loss of his career when he was only 23 years old.

“It’s a fight I would definitely like. It’s a different time now. I was very young and inexperienced at the time. And now I’m a different fighter. It would be a totally different result but it’s a fight I don’t think will happen.”

As well as stopping Nate Diaz at UFC 244, Masvidal also scored two spectacular knockouts over Darren Till and Ben Askren this year. While Dana White has expressed an interest in making a fight between Jorge and the UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, the newly crowned BMF has repeatedly stated that he’s only interested in big money fights in 2020.

On the same night (November 2nd) that Masvidal beat Diaz to win the BMF title, Canelo scored an eleventh round knockout of Sergey Kovalev, to win the WBO light heavyweight title.

With all the talk of MMA-boxing crossovers recently and the imminent launch of Zuffa Boxing, do you think we could see a boxing showdown between Jorge Masvidal and Canelo Alvarez in 2020?
