Christian Lee: Eddie Alvarez Wants A Title Shot Gifted To Him

Christian Lee doesn’t believe Eddie Alvarez has done enough to earn a shot at his ONE lightweight title, but says he wouldn’t turn down the fight if ONE Championship offered it to him.

Alvarez has had a rocky run in the Singapore-based promotion, suffering a brutal TKO loss to Timofey Nastyukhin in his debut in 2019. Before bouncing back with a gritty win over Eduard Folayang a few months later.

Then after not competing in 2020 due to COVID, Alvarez returned to action at ONE on TNT 1 in April against Iuri Lapicus in a potential title eliminator, but suffered a disqualification loss. Although this was overturned to a no-contest. Three weeks later at ONE on TNT 3, he faced Ok Rae Yoon in hopes of a getting his title aspirations back on track, but suffered another setback, losing via unanimous decision.

Commenting on his performances in an interview last month, Lee asked Alvarez to do more to earn a title shot because his record in the ONE Circle is subpar.

Alvarez wasn’t very happy with the remarks, and took to Twitter to claim that he’s 3-1 in the promotion, believing he won his fights against Lapicus and Rae Yoon. The 37 year old also claimed that ONE Championship is ‘protecting’ Lee from him.

Eddie Alvarez Doesn’t Deserve A Title Shot

Responding to Alvarez’s social media jabs in an interview with ONE Championship, Lee said that because the former Bellator and UFC champion hasn’t done enough to earn a title shot, he’s trying to make some noise on social media in hopes of a getting a title fight gifted to him.

“It’s a race against time for Eddie,” Lee said. “He’s getting older. He’s really on a losing streak in ONE Championship, and he wants that title shot so bad. I think he’s just trying to do whatever he can to stir up some noise, to get some people behind him so that hopefully ONE Championship will present him the title shot, gift it to him.”

Although Lee maintains that Alvarez shouldn’t be fighting for the title until he racks up a few wins, but said that if ONE wants to book that fight, he won’t turn it down.

“Whatever fight they put in front of me, I’ve always taken,” Lee said. “I don’t really see how it would be justified, fighting Eddie. But then again, if the company wants to make it happen, I’ve never turned a fight down.”
