Coach Mendez: Khabib vs McGregor Rematch Could Happen

According to AKA’s head coach Javier Mendez, a rematch between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor is very much a possibility.

The two lightweights were dance partners in the biggest fight in mixed martial arts history at UFC 229 two years ago. An intensely heated build-up with a genuine rivalry captured the fans’ imagination. Javier Mendez believes there is still a huge interest in another clash between Khabib and McGregor, and told The Express that the UFC should capitalise on the interest.

“If I’m the UFC and I’m the president, I’m not going to let that fight off the table,” coach Mendez said. “Especially if Conor wants to fight and Khabib is still the champion. Then you can make that fight. I wouldn’t let them [not fight]. That’s my job, right? To make the most money for the company.”

Khabib is currently scheduled to fight Justin Gaethje in a title unification bout at UFC 254 next month, but Mendez points to a future clash with the Irishman.

“Let’s put it this way,” Mendez continued. “If that makes the most money out of anybody, then that means it’s the most interesting fight people want to see. Correct Obviously I would think everybody still wants to see that fight. Otherwise, why would they pay for it. That’s why I think the UFC would do that.”

McGregor announced he had retired in June, claiming that there was nothing exciting to him in the sport. Despite his latest retirement, ‘The Notorious’ is expected to return to the Octagon in 2021.
