Conor McGregor vs ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone Set For UFC 246

Conor McGregor is set to return on January 18th in the main event at UFC 246, against ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in a welterweight clash. For a while, it was looking like the fight wasn’t going to happen, after the UFC named their February 8th card UFC 246 on their website.

However in the last couple of hours, UFC president Dana White has told ESPN that McGregor has signed his contract and ‘Cowboy’ is ready to sign his.

“Conor has signed and ‘Cowboy’ is ready to go,” Dana told ESPN.

He may not have signed the contract yet but moments ago, Cerrone posted this photo on social media:

Last month, McGregor announced that he would return on January 18th but did not state the name of the opponent. Although within days, both Dana and ‘Cowboy’ stated that the he was the targeted opponent.

McGregor hasn’t fought since losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov just over one year ago at UFC 229. Prior to the loss, the 31 year old Irishman’s previous fight was at UFC 205 three years ago, when he stopped Eddie Alvarez in the second round, to win the UFC lightweight title.

Conor would lated relinquish the title, after seeking a boxing contest with Floyd Mayweather. Where he was stopped by ‘Money’ in the tenth round.

UFC 246 will be McGregor’s third time competing at welterweight, having fought Nate Diaz both times at 170lbs. Although he has consistently campaigned for a rematch with Khabib, perhaps a short term goal is to fight for the BMF belt.

Jorge Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz earlier this month at UFC 244 to win that title. Dana has said that it was a one off title but as we know in MMA, things change. Especially when there’s a lot of money on the table.

‘Cowboy’ is coming off two TKO losses to Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje. Prior to this, the 36 year old had won three on the bounce. Cerrone holds the record for most the wins in the UFC with 23 and the most finishes in the UFC with 16.

McGregor and ‘Cowboy’ both fought on the same card on January 18th in 2015. Conor beat Denis Siver in the main event and Cerrone defeated Benson Henderson in the co-main event. Exactly five years later, they are finally set to face off inside the Octagon.

Since the announcement, Darren Till has called out Robert Whittaker to fight in the co-main event. He had previously called out the former UFC middleweight champion to fight at UFC London in March.

UFC 246 is set to go down at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 18th.
