Cosmo Alexandre Reveals Why He Stayed With ONE Championship

Cosmo Alexandre hasn’t competed since May of last year, when he knocked out Sage Northcutt in just 29 seconds at ONE: Enter The Dragon. The reason for his inactivity turned out to be a contract dispute with ONE Championship, where it got to the point where ‘Good Boy’ took to social media to voice his frustrations.

But the issue has since been fully resolved and he’s has agreed to a new deal with the organisation. Thanks in part to his new manager Ali Abdelaziz, it looks like Alexandre will be staying with ONE for the remainder of his career. In an interview with MMA Junkie, the 38-year-old opened up on the reasons why it was important to stay with the Singapore based promotion.

“After my fight against Sage, we started talking about my contract – so it was a long talk. [It was] kind of like a long fight. But in the end now, I talked straight with [ONE chairman] Chatri [Sityodtong], and I think it was better for me. A lot of people talk about UFC and other shows here in the US, but for me I see ONE Championship is safe for me.

“It’s safer for my family. I’m 38. I don’t want to fight until like 43, 44. I just want to fight a few more years and looking at it this way, it’s safer for me to stay in ONE Championship.”

Alexandre’s new contract with ONE guarantees him six fights, regardless of the results. At 38 years old, he has no plans of fighting longer than he needs to. His plan at the moment is to fulfil the six-fight contract and potentially hang up the gloves.

“Financial, because I made a deal – six fights – so I know I’m going to fight the six fights. So it doesn’t matter what happens in my last five fights,” said the Brazilian. “If I fight five and for some reason I lose the five, I will still fight in my sixth fight.

“Any other show in the US, [you] probably you can’t do it. Like UFC, if you sign a four-fight deal, if you lose the first two, maybe you fight a third, but probably they will cut you, so you won’t fight your fourth. So for me, that’s what I was thinking. So for me it’s safer to stay in ONE Championship.”

Now that Cosmo Alexandre has a new six-fight deal with ONE Championship, who would you like to see him fight next inside the ONE Circle?
