‘Cowboy’ Cerrone On Tony Ferguson: He’s Tough As F*** But I’ll Be Alright

The lightweight division is one of the most stacked divisions in the UFC. You have Tony Ferguson, ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, Conor McGregor and Justin Gaethje all jostling for the number one spot and the right to challenge the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier, for the 155lbs title.

After UFC 238, we may have a clear number one contender though. In what the UFC has called ‘The People’s Main Event’, Ferguson and ‘Cowboy’ will face off inside the Octagon and will be hard to deny that the winner is deserving of the next shot at the title.

So as you can imagine, ‘Cowboy’ didn’t need a lot of convincing to take the fight, on relatively short notice (as he told MMA Junkie).

“There wasn’t really any convincing that had to go on [for me]. More or less the UFC called me and asked me if I wanted to fight and I said yes, then it took two or three days for Tony to agree to the fight, which really pissed me off because the UFC called me and offered to me and left me in his limbo.

“I keep calling like, ‘Dana [White], I’m on f***ing vacation. Can I drink beer and eat guacamole, or do you want me to go f***ing run on the beach? Because this in-between, I don’t know what’s going on, is f***ing bulls***.’ So Tony took long figuring it out.

“I don’t think he wanted to have to fight again other than a title fight. I think he believes he deserves a shot, so for him fighting someone like me is super dangerous. Why would he want to put himself at risk of [losing] a title shot? Especially fighting a f***ing killer. But I don’t give a s***. That’s the difference between me. I’ll fight anybody. So I’ve got to beat them all anyway.”

‘Cowboy’ knows what’s at stake against Tony at UFC 238, but he also knows exactly how tough of a fight ‘El Cucuy’ will be as well. But the 36 year old is still confident.

“I watched him fight Lando [Vannata], my buddy. I know what kind of opponent I’m against. He’s tough as f***, he’s very unorthodox, but not a very high-level striker, I don’t think. He’s just high volume. We’ll be all right.”

And if he will be ‘all right’ on the night, ‘Cowboy’ believes there’s no question that a shot at the title will be next.

“I don’t even think UFC needs to say that, because this would be it. There would be nobody else. I beat Tony; I get the title [shot]. There’s no one else in line.”

Cerrone is on a three fight winning streak and coming off of an impressive unanimous decision win over Al Iaquinta in the main event of the recent UFC Ottawa.

Ferguson has won his last eleven fights. Not losing since 2012, when he lost a unanimous decision to Michael Johnson. The 35 year old last fought at UFC 229 last October, when he beat Anthony Pettis is one of the fights of the year.

UFC 238 goes down on June 8th, at the United Center in Chicago. The pay-per-view card sees two title fights in the main events. Henry Cejudo and Marlon Moraes will compete for the vacant bantamweight title. And Valentina Shevchenko will defend her flyweight title against Jessica Eye.
