Dana White: Edwards Gets Title Shot With Impressive UFC Vegas 21 Win

After a string of bad luck in the past two years, Leon Edwards finally has the chance to make things fair with a win over Belal Muhammad in the UFC Vegas 21 main event this weekend.

Edwards has found himself on the sidelines for almost two years due to the COVID pandemic. He was originally scheduled to fight Tyron Woodley last March, but the fight was scrapped after global travel restrictions were imposed. The Brit was then scheduled to face Khamzat Chimaev last December, but he had to pull out after testing positive for the virus.

The two were then rescheduled to fight in January and this weekend, but Chimaev was forced to withdraw on both occasions due to COVID-related complications. As a result, Edwards will now face Muhammad at UFC Vegas 21.

Edwards, who is on an eight fight win streak, has long been eyeing a shot at the UFC welterweight title, and he will cement his place as the number one contender should he beat Muhammad, Dana White told BT Sports (as transcribed by MMA Fighting).

“100 percent [he’s next],” Dana said.

After Chimaev was forced to withdraw, the UFC tried to match Edwards up with Colby Covington but the former interim champion turned down the fight. Dana however, said that the fans can expect to see ‘Chaos’ back in action soon.

“I don’t remember what the Colby Covington situation was, but we’ll get Colby a fight here soon,” Dana promised. “Right now, I don’t know [who’s next for him]. We’ll see how some of this stuff plays out, but we’ll get him figured out.”

Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal 2

Jorge Masvidal stepped in on short notice to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title at UFC 251, but lost via unanimous decision. Since the loss on Fight Island, ‘Gamebred’ had been very vocal, stating that he only lost because he didn’t have a full camp. Not happy with his comments, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ wants to shut up the Miami native once and for all by giving him a full camp and beating him even more decisively.

“[Usman] was telling me that he doesn’t like the fact that Masvidal has an excuse,” Dana said. “So he said, ‘I want to make it so this guy has a great camp and then there’s no excuses.’”

Who do you think is the biggest threat to Kamaru Usman’s UFC welterweight title, Leon Edwards, Colby Covington or Jorge Masvidal?
