Dana White Changes Tune On GSP And Conor McGregor

Back in February of this year, Georges St-Pierre retired from the sport of MMA. In the press conference to announce his retirement, GSP stated that the reason he retired was because Dana White and the UFC had no interest in him fighting the UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Since GSP and Khabib began to openly state that they would like to meet each other in the Octagon, Dana has reiterated the fact that he has zero interest in making that fight. At any weight.

That was until recently. During the UFC 242 post fight press conference, when asked about the possibility of Khabib and GSP fighting, the UFC president replied ‘Sure’.

And now it would appear that the UFC boss has warmed further to the idea. Dana insisted that Tony Ferguson is next for the lightweight champion but if that fight doesn’t happen, GSP could be next in line.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Dana was asked who’s next for Khabib.

“Tony Ferguson is the fight that needs to happen. We’ve tried to do it four other times, so hopefully we can get it done this time. But that’s the fight that makes sense.”

But when asked about GSP fighting Khabib, Dana said he’d be interested in making the the fight if anything happened to Ferguson.

“And that could happen too. So we’ll see what happens with Tony. You know Tony’s had opportunities before that he didn’t take. So if he doesn’t, I would be interested in talking about GSP.”

Dana had also stated at the UFC 242 post fight press conference that if anything happened to Ferguson, Conor McGregor would likely get the next shot at Khabib. But not only has the UFC boss warmed to the idea of GSP stepping in for Ferguson if anything were to happen to ‘El Cucuy’, Dana also stated that McGregor needs to fight someone else first, before getting another shot at the title. Something most fans feel very strongly about.

“That’s possible too (Conor getting another shot at Khabib), down the road. I think Conor would fight someone else before that.”

Khabib vs Tony has to happen. And if Khabib gets past Ferguson, the fans will be crying out for a showdown between the Khabib and GSP.

As for McGregor, it looks likely he will face Justin Gaethje or rematch Dustin Poirier at the start of the next year. And although he certainly doesn’t deserve a title shot right now, a win over Gaethje or Poirier would certainly put him right back in the mix.

Do you think we’ll see Khabib vs GSP and/or Khabib vs McGregor in 2020?
