Dana White Talks Fighters Copying Conor McGregor

One can argue that no one in UFC history has made Dana White more money than Conor McGregor. And Conor has been in the sport for a relatively short period.

The brash Irishman quickly ascended the food chain, beating Jose Aldo in just 14 seconds to become the undisputed featherweight champion, and later dethroned Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC lightweight champion. While McGregor hasn’t been active inside the Octagon, he still makes the promotion a lot of mint.

The relationship between Dana White and Conor hasn’t always been perfect. However, UFC head honcho understands that McGregor is a businessman, and while they don’t always see eye-to-eye, they can still do business with each other. And Dana also understands why fighters are now copying Conor everywhere, whether it is in terms of marketing themselves, or trying to do business with the promotions.

“It happens”, White told Hashtag Sports this week (transcript via MMA Fighting). “When you see a guy who’s as successful as he is and he’s fun, I mean you see the guy’s fun and everything else, and you start thinking ‘well maybe if I act like this, I’ll have what he has’.”

Dana also spoke about how no one can replace the cocky Irishman, and while people can copy him, no one can become the next Conor McGregor in the UFC.

“There’s only one Conor McGregor”, White said. “People will always ask me ‘do you think you’ll ever find another Conor McGregor, are you trying to find another Conor McGregor?’

“There will never be another Conor McGregor, but there will be somebody else who’s different in their own way and will become a star in their own way.”
