Dana White: The Biggest, Baddest Fights Are Going To Be On Fight Island

Dana White was relentless in his efforts to make live events during the global pandemic, even when the media, many fans, various commissions, and even the state of California, was against him. The UFC president has managed to pass all obstacles put in his way however, with the pinnacle of his efforts being UFC Fight Island, on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

The New Fight Capital Of The World

Speaking to The National (transcript by BJPenn.com), Dana revealed that he plans on keeping Fight Island as the promotion’s primary location for future events for longer than initially expected.

“The shows that we bring here, this is the only international destination for fights. So all the biggest and the baddest fights coming up that we have are going to be here,” Dana said. “If you look at our roster of champions, they’re from all over the world. So the biggest, baddest fights over the next God knows how long, are going to be here in Abu Dhabi.

“That’s why I’m saying Abu Dhabi is going to be looked at as the new fight capital of the world. It used to be Las Vegas. It definitely isn’t Las Vegas right now.”

Championship Fights

The UFC has nine cards (including four Contender Series events) lined up in August at their APEX Center in Las Vegas, but with the United States now seemingly on the verge of another shutdown, we could see some of these events moved to Fight Island.

Regardless of whether August’s shows get to go ahead as planned in Las Vegas, Dana expects the biggest title fights for the remainder of 2020 to take place on Fight Island.

“Khabib [versus Justin Gaethje] will be the next,” Dana said. “We’re talking about [middleweight champion] Israel Adesanya versus Paulo Costa, that fights happening. [Women’s strawweight champion] Weili Zhang versus Rose Namajunas is a possibility. All the massive, big fights with literally the champion versus the number one contender are all looking like Fight Island Abu Dhabi.”

For which of the upcoming title fights that Dana White discussed are you most excited about?
