Daniel Cormier Breaks Down Israel Adesanya vs Jon Jones

After UFC 243, we have a new 185lbs champion. In yesterday’s main event in Melbourne, Israel Adesanya put on a clinic to defeat Robert Whittaker and become the undisputed UFC middleweight champion. During his post fight press conference, all talk was on two obvious potential opponents for the new champion, Jon Jones and Paulo Costa.

Going into UFC 243, Adesanya was going back and forth with both Jones and Costa. While he’s expected to defend his title against Costa next, Adesanya has stated that he will fight Jones at the beginning of 2021 at the new Allegiant Stadium being built currently in Las Vegas.

Fighting Jones would obviously mean ‘The Last Stylebender’ moving up to light heavyweight. Someone who knows all about winning belts in two different weight divisions, and knows what it’s like to fight Jones, is the man who commentated on his win over Whittaker at the Marvel Stadium, Daniel Cormier.

Speaking on the ESPN post-fight show (transcript via BJPenn.com), the former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion discussed how he thought Adesanya would get on against Jones at 205lbs.

“He’s just small. He’s just small for Jones. Jones is a big guy and I think people underestimate how big he is. When he grabs you, because he’s so big up top — they make fun of how small his legs are — but he’s 225lbs. But a lot of the weight is up top. He’s so long that he almost like hangs on you. It’s like a towel when you’re in the clinch and I think Izzy may struggle with that because Jones is so big.

“I would not mind watching them fight because if Jones has to stand with this guy he’s in trouble. Jones is very hittable. But Izzy needs to get a lot bigger if he’s going to fight this guy.”

There’s no doubt that a fight between Adesanya and Jones would be absolutely huge. Especially if both keep winning. And even more so, if they continue to go back and forth. Jones hit out at Adesanya as recently as last week, when he said he would make him his bitch.

While Adesanya is almost certainly going to face Costa in his first title defence, there is no news as to when Jones will defend his light heavyweight title next. Cormier meanwhile, has confirmed that he will face Stipe Miocic for a third time and then hang up his gloves.

How do you see a potential fight between Israel Adesanya and Jone Jones going down?
