Daniel Cormier Doesn’t Think The UFC Should Release Jon Jones

One man who knows a thing or two about Jon Jones getting into trouble is Daniel Cormier. When news came out last week that the UFC light heavyweight champion had been arrested again, ‘DC’ said that his phone blew up with friends messaging him, expecting him to be celebrating.

Speaking on Monday’s episode of ‘DC’ & Helwani on ESPN however, Cormier said he doesn’t believe in celebrating someone else’s issues. Even if that person is his former arch rival.

“But that’s not me. I didn’t celebrate. I didn’t celebrate the other kid getting in trouble again. I don’t think you should celebrate or dance on someone’s grave in their darkest moments.”

And while many fans are calling for the UFC to release Jones after the latest of a long list of run ins with the law, Cormier believes that the promotion need to help him.

“I think the UFC needs to save him. Keep him, but then try really to help him try to get better.” he said.

But while Cormier hopes to see the UFC do what they can to help Jones, the former two division UFC champion hopes he is dealt with firmly by the law.

“[I hope the judge in charge of the case will] really put their foot down and demand that he sees the error of his ways.”

With the world currently on lockdown as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Cormier believes being locked at home isn’t an ideal situation for Jones.

“For a guy that has these issues – whether it be alcohol, whether it be drugs – that dead time is your worse enemy. All those vices start to pull at you, whenever you’re just sitting at home with nothing to do, especially if you’re not a person that does it a lot.”

The fact that Jones posted a message to everyone telling them to stay home, just days before being arrested, wasn’t missed by Cormier.

“That’s the biggest problem, it’s just not real. It’s never been real. So when he’s on the front line saying ‘stay at home,’ you know that at night, when he gets an opportunity, he sneaks out and does whatever he wants. That’s what people with problems do, and this kid has a problem.”

Cormier told a story about when he was arrested at the age of 19 for fighting, which also resulted in his mother having to take out a second mortgage on her house to pay for the victim’s medical bills.

“I thought my life was over, as a 19 year old kid, had not even wrestled a match in college. One time was enough to get me to go, ‘you know what? Don’t be stupid Daniel.’ but for other people, they just do it over and over again.”

Jones was arrested on Wednesday night for aggravated DWI, negligent use of a firearm, possession of an open bottle, and driving without proof of insurance. This is not the first time ‘Bones’ has been arrested. In May of 2012, he was charged with a DUI after he crashed into a telephone pole. In April of 2015 he was charged with a hit and run on a pregnant woman after going through a red light.

Do you agree with Daniel Cormier, should the UFC keep Jon Jones and help save him from himself?
