Daniel Cormier Expects Super Cards Once Things Go Back To Normal

While the Coronavirus wreaks havoc around the world, its impact on sports has been severe. Main stream sports are at a strict halt as we speak due to the pandemic. In the past few weeks we have seen major sports leagues cancelling or postponing events due to the outbreak. Amidst the chaos, the UFC been forced to postpone three back to back fight cards to protect its fans, athletes, officials and the public from contamination. Even though it is a massive blow for the organisation, Daniel Cormier believes there is something positive to take out of the situation.

While talking on Michael Bisping’s Believe You Me podcast, a very excited Cormier said that he thinks we can expect lots of super fights and super cards once things go back to usual.

“The UFC is on pause. Not even the UFC, the whole world is on pause right now. All sports, everything that entertains. So it’s just a wait and see. But you know what you can look forward to as an athlete is knowing that when the UFC returns, you’re going to be a part of some massive fight cards. Because all these fights have to happen, and as long as the UFC is on pause, the UFC is not making any money.

“So when the UFC comes back, they have to make all that money that’s supposed to be made over the course of the year, so they’re going to put on massive fight cards every single week until the end of the year and I cannot wait to be a part of it. Super fight after super fight after super fight, super fight card after super fight card, super card, super card. It’s gonna be like the UFC back in the day when there was one every couple of months and you got massive cards every time.”

Despite losing three successive cards, UFC president Dana White is adamant that UFC 249 will go ahead as planned on April 18th. Speaking to Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole, the UFC boss said that he has several potential locations for the highly anticipated UFC lightweight title between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.

As far as Cormier knows, his AKA teammate Khabib and Tony’s fight at UFC 249 is still going ahead.

“I hear that the fight is still happening. I haven’t heard that it’s not. So we operate under the assumption that it’s still going to happen on April 18th. I don’t know how, I don’t know where, but until Dana comes out and says it’s off, I’m gonna believe that I get to watch Khabib fight Tony on April 18th from wherever in the world that they’re gonna allow a fight to happen.”

If all goes to plan, we can look forward to seeing some amazing fight cards in the upcoming months. Some of the exciting fights that need to be rearranged include:

  • Tyron Woodley vs Leon Edwards
  • Francis Ngannou vs Jairzinho Rozenstruik
  • Cody Garbrandt vs Raphael Assuncao
  • Alistair Overeem vs Walt Harris

Daniel Cormier is also expected to complete his trilogy with Stipe Miocic in the summer as well.
