Darren Till Talks Regaining Focus, Wants Rematch With Masvidal

Just a few months ago, Darren Till was on top of the world. Considered by many to be the top welterweight contender back then, Till was just fingertips away from holding the title. However, everything changed when “Killa Gorilla” first lost his title fight to the then champion Tyron Woodley, followed by a devastating loss at the hands of Jorge Masvidal in the United Kingdom. Till also ran into some trouble with the law outside of the cage, something he isn’t thrilled about.

Since then, Till has been talking about taking time off, and regaining his focus. More recently, the former title challenger spoke with Fighters Only magazine about the need to take time for himself, and wanting a rematch with Jorge Masvidal.

“I’m not saying I’m back, but I’m just in my happy place”, Till said (transcript from TheMacLife). “I feel like the Darren Till before he was fighting in Rotterdam. I got back from Brazil … I was just in this world of going to the gym, training and I was training really hard.

“I think I was wrong to myself, to my craft”, Till said about his losses to Masvidal and Woodley. “I wasn’t fully committed. For the [Tyron] Woodley fight in particular, that was one fight where I have to say I was in some condition. I trained like a monster. The better guy won that night. … Maybe my hand was 50 percent in. If I beat Masvidal, it would have been me vs. Usman. But now it’s [Ben] Askren – Masvidal. I think if Askren wins, he probably might get a shot.”

Darren Till also said that he would want to fight Masvidal, with a renewed focus.

“Masvidal, he’s a respectful guy”, Till said. “He’d come to me after the fight and I was – not crying, but I had my head down and someone tapped me on my shoulder and it was Masvidal, and he shook my hand. He was like, ‘You nearly had me in the first’.

“I want that f*cking rematch. I want that rematch.”
