Eight Fighters Gain Over 10% Of Their Body Weight Ahead Of Bellator 228

This past weekend, Bellator 228 went down in Inglewood, Southern California. Of the thirty four fighters on the card, eight gained more than ten percent of their body weight between the weigh-ins and fight night. With another five fighters gaining ten percent.

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), led by executive director Andy Foster, have been proactive in recent years, in trying to curb extreme weight cuts in the sport.

Since the summer of 2018, the CSAC have released the fighters’ fight night weight at any MMA event taking place in their state. The CSAC recommend that fighters gain no more than ten percent body weight after the weigh-ins and can recommend that fighters move up a weight class in the future.

The California Commission are also considering bringing in a rule where they can cancel a fight if one of the fighters gains more than fifteen percent. In August, the CSAC recommended Paulo Costa and five other fighters who fought on the UFC 241 card to move up a weight class. While also in August, they suspended Aspen Ladd’s bantamweight license for gaining almost eighteen percent body weight, ahead of her fight against Germaine de Randamie at UFC Sacramento.

Of the eight fighters who gained more than the ten percent threshold at Bellator 228, five competed in the Bellator Featherweight World Grand Prix. And of the four fighters that gained more than the CSAC’s ten percent recommendation against an opponent who didn’t, three lost.
