Following UFC Boston Win, Dana White Wants Joe Lauzon To Retire

It was a night of redemption and celebration for UFC veteran Joe Lauzon at UFC Boston. After coming out on the losing end of his last three fights, the hometown hero finally got back to the win column with a dominant display, and was at his belligerent best. As someone said on Twitter, it was the mythical ‘First Round Lauzon’ we witnessed against Diego Sanchez and Takanori Gomi. And it couldn’t have come at a better time.

After getting his hand raised against Jonathan Pearce, Lauzon (28-15 MMA) thanked the fans for getting behind him. The kid from Massachusetts who started his professional MMA journey 15 years ago, might’ve wrapped up his career in his home state.

That is if we believe Dana White. The UFC president was impressed with Lauzon’s performance at UFC Boston, and revealed during the post-fight presser that he and Joe agreed it would be his last fight.

“Me and Joe Lauzon had a deal that he would retire after this fight, win, lose, or draw. And he didn’t do it”, White told reporters during the post-fight scrum (h/t to BloodyElbow).

When pressed if he would talk Lauzon into hanging up his gloves, White said he would.

“Yeah”, he responded. “What better way to go out than tonight? And he beat a real guy tonight. He beat a tough guy that I bet a lot of people didn’t think he was gonna beat. And he made it look easy.

“And this is one of those things when you’re talking to a guy who loves to fight like Joe Lauzon loves to fight, and the Chuck Liddells, and many, many more in the past that I’ve dealt with”, White continued. “‘It’s so hard to walk away. I looked great tonight.’ And then if they lose, ‘I can’t go out like this. Getting beat in my hometown, in front of my…’ It’s just, you know…”

The TUF alum hadn’t won a fight in over two years, and with the latest win, Joe also set the record for the most finishes in the UFC lightweight history. Not a bad way to walk out, if he were to.
