Honorio Banario: I know I Am Capable Of More

2019 didn’t go the way Team Lakay‘s Honorio Banario would have liked. ‘The Rock’ started the year with a 14-7 record but after coming up short in all three of his bouts this year, will go into 2020 with his record standing at 14-10.

“I am honestly a bit disappointed how my 2019 turned out. It was not my year as I have lost all my matches. My fellow athletes who I shared the ring with this year were truly amazing and on another level. I prepared and did my best in each and every outing but the results show that it was not enough.”

Although no one is ever happy to lose, Banario can take some comfort in the fact that he lost to some of the best guys in the ONE lightweight division.

Banario’s first setback this year came against Lowen Tynanes, where he was stopped in the first round of their ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix Quarter-Finals. The 30 year old then lost to Dae Sung Park, via unanimous decision. Before losing to Shinya Aoki, via a first round submission at ONE: Century.

Despite the three consecutive defeats, Banario remains confident that he will bounce back and believes that he can make another run at the title.

“It’s tough losing those matches one after the other. As a former world champion, I know that I am capable of doing more. I know that I can be better and become a champion again.

“Right now I’m taking a step back and trying to look at the bigger picture of my entire career, there is always something that I can improve on and I will keep on working on those for me to win my next bouts.”

After becoming a father for the first time in 2019, Honorio Banario is still thankful for the past twelve months and has extra motivation to get back to winning ways in the new year.

“I am thankful for 2019 and I am ready to welcome 2020. I’m sorry for disappointing everyone and I can guarantee you all that I am already working on my shortcomings.

“I am tired of losing so I will push myself harder to have the opposite results next year. I have new sources of motivation in my wife and son so expect a new better Honorio Banario for 2020.”
