UFC: Jared Cannonier Wants To Fight Robert Whittaker Next

The middleweight division is seeing a bit of a reshuffle yet again, and while Robert Whittaker lost to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243, Jared Cannonier is slowly climbing up the ranks. “The Killa Gorilla” has won three fights on the bounce since moving down to middleweight, and is eyeing a fight that will get him closer to the title.

Adesanya has already made it clear that he will be fighting Paulo Costa next. Meanwhile, Whittaker too made it clear that he wasn’t going anywhere, and will get a win or two on the bounce and fight for the title he lost this past weekend.

Jared Cannonier however feels Whittaker would be the perfect opponent for him, who will get him closer to a title fight.

“Anybody ahead of me gets me closer to a title (fight). I would say a fight with Whittaker would put me closer to a title fight than a fight with any of those other guys. If I were to rank them or put them in a number or anything”, Cannonier said on The Ariel Helwani Show (transcript via MMA Mania).

“So I would say Whittaker because he just lost the title. He didn’t look bad in his efforts. I thought he looked great. I think he will only look better especially for being off as long as he did. I think he will do better in his next outing.”

Jared Cannonier also said he wouldn’t rule out a fight with Yoel Romero.

“Everybody is mentioning a fight against Romero. I don’t care either way, as long as it moves me forward and closer to the title. So if it has to be one fight that is going to get me to the title, then the one that will get me there.”
