Joanna Jedrzejczyk Promised Title Shot With Win Over Michelle Waterson
Joanna Jedrzejczyk is set to face Michelle Waterson at UFC San Francisco, on October 12th. Having moved up to flyweight in her last bout, Jedrzejczyk will move back down to strawweight and face the number seven ranked women’s 115 pounder, in Waterson.
Obviously any clash between two top tenners, is going to have title implications. However, Dan Lambert, the owner at American Top Team (ATT), where Jedrzejczyk trains, has said that Jedrzejczyk has been promised a title shot, if she beats Waterson in San Francisco. Speaking to BJPenn.com, Lambert said that the UFC had told her that if she wins, she’ll face the winner of the current strawweight champion Jessica Andrade, and Weili Zhang, who fight at UFC Shenzhen, on August 31st.
“She has the best chance to get a title shot at strawweight. The UFC told her with a win she gets a title shot. I’m happy to see here have a clear path to get a title shot. With no clear path, she was not going to rush back. I’m happy to see her back training.
“From Joanna’s standpoint, the path to a title shot is quicker with Jessica holding the title. Selfishly speaking we were hoping for Jessica. She has to defend her title first [against Zhang] and who knows how that goes. After Joanna’s and Jessica’s fight, if they both win, the UFC will make that fight.”
Jedrzejczyk has a dominant win over Andrade but since then has lost to Rose Namajunas twice, and lost to Valentina Schevchenko in her last outing to the Octagon, whilst fighting for the UFC flyweight title at UFC 231. The former champion did however win her last fight at strawweight, beating Tecia Torres at UFC Calgary last July.
Waterson is on a three fight win streak, having notched up wins over Cortney Casey, Felice Herrig and Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
Andrade will defend her strawweight title for the first time against Zhang, when they meet in the main event in Shenzhen, at the end of the month. The Brazilian defeated Namajunas at UFC 237 in March, to win the title.
Do you think a win over Michelle Waterson, should earn Joanna Jedrzejczyk a title shot against the winner of Jessica Andrade and Weili Zhang?
Since publishing this story, the UFC has announced that their card on October 12th will go down in Tampa, Florida and not San Francisco.
