Jorge Masivdal vs Nate Diaz To Headline UFC 244

Moments ago, ESPN’s Ariel Helwani took to social media to post several tweets, stating that Jorge Masvidal vs Nate Diaz will headline UFC 244, at Madison Square Garden, New York on November 2nd.

As Helwani points out, it’s been an eventful few days in the UFC welterweight division. First talks broke down between the champion Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington. Then the UFC tried to make Usman vs Jorge Masvidal. Then when this fight fell through because of Usman, the UFC switched their attention to Masvidal vs Leon Edwards for the 170lbs title. But any chance of that fight happening went out the window, when talks began again between Masvidal and Nate.

The fight got finalized yesterday afternoon, and Dana White just confirmed it to @bokamotoESPN. They tried to originally make it a couple of weeks ago but were far apart on numbers. Then they tried to book Usman v Covington but negotiations stalled with Covington.

Then they tried to do Usman vs Masvidal but after Masvidal agreed they couldn’t come to terms with Usman. In fact, things got so bad with Usman that they threatened to strip him and pulled all his guest fighter duties in Abu Dhabi.

At that point, they reached out to Leon Edwards to see if he do a vacant title fight versus Masvidal. Those talks didn’t get very far because in the midst of all of that (around Wednesday night) talks reignited with Diaz. By Thursday night it was looking very promising.

And then after an intense day of negotiations, they got the deal done yesterday afternoon.

This is a blessing disguise for Usman and Covington. No word on what they’ll do with them at this time but this gives them a chance to reset and book that fight later. That’s the fight that needs to happen but those talks haven’t re-started yet.

The fight between Nate and Masvidal will be a five round non-title fight. And as Helwani points out, the booking of this fight, gives Usman and Covington a chance to make the title fight we need to see.
