Jose Aldo Calls Out Henry Cejudo

Over recent years, more and more fighters are moving up and down weight classes in the UFC. And whereas once it was a rarity for a champion to even think about searching for a second belt, it’s become quite the norm to see UFC champions actively pursuing a second title.

It’s quite usual to see fighters move up a weight class as they get older but every now and then, you will see the odd fighter buck the trend and go down in weight. Recently former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, announced he is going to move down to bantamweight. Although he has always been small for his weight class.

Now it looks like his former opponent Jose Aldo, will be joining him at 135lbs. Speaking to Combate (as transcribed by MMA Mania), the former UFC featherweight champion said that he is looking to move down to bantamweight to challenge the new 135lbs king, Henry Cejudo.

“I sat down with everybody, did a study, and I think there’s a real possibility I can make 61kg [135 pounds]. This is the new division I want to move to, and I’m asking for the title shot right away. That’s what matters for me now. Cejudo said he’s open to [fighting] anyone, so I’m open to that. I want the opportunity to fight against him and beat him.

“He’s an Olympic champion, a great athlete, and I respect his history a lot. He deserves everything he’s winning, he has his merits. If the UFC thinks it’s a great fight, I think they’ll want that, it’s a huge challenge. He’s been talking after defeating [Marlon Moraes] that he was open to fighting big names. Since he’s open, it’s the green light.

“Nobody expected him to beat (Moraes) on the feet, you have to respect that. To me that’s great, it’s a good size for me, he has a fighting style that pleases me, that matches up well with my game. If it’s against him or not, I think about being adapted to the weight, fast and strong, which will be my differential in this division.”

It will be interesting to see if Aldo does indeed move down to bantamweight. He’s always been a big featherweight and has often talked about moving up to lightweight.

If he is to fight Cejudo, he will have to wait a while. The UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion is out of action until next year, after surgery on his left shoulder. Dana White has also state that Cejudo will defend his flyweight title first.

Aldo is coming off of a unanimous decision loss to Alex Volkanovski at UFC 237. Prior to that, the Brazilian scored back-to-back TKO wins against Jeremy Stephens and Renato Moicano.

Would you like to see Jose Aldo move down to bantamweight to challenge Henry Cejudo?
