Kamaru Usman Criticises Tyron Woodley For Ducking Opponents

After Kamaru Usman took the welterweight title from Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 in March of last year, he received some words of wisdom from ‘The Chosen One’s’ mother in a now-famous exchange that made Joe Rogan cry. But whatever tenderness existed between the two seems to have faded away. When MMA Fighting caught up with ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’, he had some harsh words for his former opponent.

“This whole situation has kind of thrown a damper on things, but I feel like Tyron is holding himself back for god knows what,” Usman explained. “Cause you’re not getting any younger. You’re a talented guy. You’ve got a lot of skills. The only way for you to get back to the title is just to fight.”

Kamara continued to imply that Woodley was being too selective with his match-ups.

“Fight, guys. It doesn’t matter who you fight. Say yes to everybody. Go out there and fight, and I know he’s not saying yes to everybody.

“But say yes to anyone that they throw in front of you, and you go out there and knock out enough guys, guess what? They have no choice but to give you a title shot. This whole pick and choose who you want, this and that, that’s not working for you. Because the only thing you’re wasting is time.”

Of course, Usman’s stock has never been higher. After Colby Covington spent the better part of 2019 talking trash towards him, Kamaru made him eat his words, by busting his jaw in when they fought for the title at UFC 245. And while ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’s’ career has steadily been on the rise, Woodley’s has waned and meandered into the hip-hop world, garnering him a lot of ridicule online.

How Woodley will react to the advice proffered by his former foe remains to be seen. Recently, welterweight contender Leon Edwards accused Tyron of ducking him. However, the lion’s share of MMA fans would probably prefer to see ‘T-Wood’, at long last, get his hands on the loud-mouthed Colby Covington and repeat Kamaru Usman’s success.

What fight option do you think is best for Tyron Woodley?
