Kamaru Usman On Conor McGregor: I Think He Should Stay Retired

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, successfully defended his belt against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251 earlier this month. And although the event on Fight Island did massive pay-per-view numbers, the former two-division champion Conor McGregor still holds all the records in that department.

Although the Irish star recently declared his retirement from the sport of MMA, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ was asked about a possible fight with him, whilst speaking to TMZ Sports (as transcribed by BJPenn.com).

“That’s a lost conversation,” Usman said. “That’s a lost cause. We both know Conor gets up to the welterweight division if he’s able to pick and chose lightweights with double-digit losses that he can pick off and not have to cut weight to get down to lightweight. That’s the only time. If Conor wants a piece at welterweight, he knows who the king of the division is. I’m not going anywhere. I’m right here.”

Usman reflected on the last time he and his team verbally offered a title shot to McGregor.

“I offered him a shot,” Usman continued. “I said, ‘Hey, if you want it, it’s yours, you got it,’ and he was silent. Days later Anderson Silva says, ‘Hey, let’s do it and he responded and said yeah.’ So it’s clear right there to know if Conor is willing to step up and take a fight like this or not but I think he’s a wise guy so I think he should stay retired.”

This is not the first time Usman accused the Irishman of ducking him. And although they have gone back and forth in the past, and potential fight between the two has been speculated in the past, it’s unlikely to materialise any time soon.

How do you think Kamaru Usman vs Conor McGregor would play out?
