Kavanagh On McGregor’s Next Fight: I’m Sure I’ll Be There
Following Conor McGregor’s loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 last October, there has been speculation that he and his long time coach John Kavanagh, had had a falling out and that the former UFC two division champion would have a new home for his next training camp. We wrote an article on the subject a few weeks ago, which you can read here.
Kavanagh appears to have put any such speculation to bed though by confirming that he expects to train McGregor for his next fight. Speaking to The Mirror, Kavanagh said he doesn’t believe there’s any doubt that he will be in the Irish man’s corner when he returns.
“I don’t think [me cornering Conor] is in doubt. I’m sure I’ll be there, we talk almost daily.
“He doesn’t have a fight lined up yet but as soon as he does we’ll get the old gang back together and starting plotting, training and I’m sure he’ll steal the show again, which I’ve no doubt he’ll do.”
The SBG Ireland head coach wasn’t so sure when McGregor would next step foot inside the UFC Octagon though.
“I honestly don’t know. That’s a question for Conor, he’s got a lot of other stuff going on so I’ll just be honest and say I don’t know.”
With Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Dustin Poirier set to go down at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi, on September 7th, to unify the UFC lightweight title, Tony Ferguson vs ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone booked for UFC 238 and McGregor’s old foe Nate Diaz, returning at UFC 241 against Anthony Pettis, McGregor is running our of potential opponents, if like UFC President Dana White suggested, he plans to return this summer.
The obvious man left in the equation is Justin Gaethje. The number five ranked UFC lightweight is coming off of first round knockouts over James Vick and Edson Barboza Jr..
