Leon Edwards Accuses ‘Amateur’ Jorge Masvidal Of Running

In the main event of UFC San Antonio, Leon Edwards put in a dominant performance, to beat former UFC lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos. It was the Brit’s eighth straight win in the stacked UFC welterweight division. Only the champion Kamaru Usman, has a longer winning streak in the UFC 170lbs division, amassing ten straight wins.

Not surprising, after getting his hand raised, Edwards called out Jorge Masvidal.

And it didn’t take long for Masvidal to respond to the call out. Taking to Twitter, to first criticise Edwards’ performance, and then to tell him not to call him out again, until he’s the UFC welterweight champion.

This response however, prompted Edwards to accuse Masvidal of running.

Speaking to the media immediately after his impressive win over RDA, Edwards again hit out at the ‘amateur’ Masvidal and said he believes that he’s better than him everywhere. While also throwing shade in the direction of Ben Askren.

“I believe Masvidal is an amateur. He’s beaten nobody that I can say that he’s amazing. He did a flying knee against Ben. Ben is an amateur, he’s slow, he’s old, he’s a grappler. He’s taken some big confidence from that, I take nothing from it. It’s one of them things I think if they fought ten out of ten times, that would never happen again. So I believe I’m better than Masvidal anywhere in the fight game and I will get the opportunity to prove it.

“Who has Masvidal beat? He beat Ben Askren. Ben Askren has fought nobody. He got a close victory against Robbie, apart from that I couldn’t tell you another person that he’s beat that’s a big name. He went to China or wherever it was, stacked up a 9-0 record and came to the UFC, talked a bunch of shit, then he got to number five [ranking] above me, which is weird.”

Edwards and Masvidal came to blows back in March, backstage at UFC London, where ‘Gamebred’ famously dished out a ‘three piece and soda’ on ‘Rocky’.

Since then, the two have continued to go back and forth. With his convincing win over RDA in San Antonio, Edwards is now getting the recognition he deserves and his name is rightly in the title mix. The question is now, who should get the next shot at the champ, Usman?

Colby Covington had been promised the next shot. Although because Usman is injured, ‘Chaos’ is now fighting Robbie Lawler at UFC Newark on August 3rd. Whether you love him or hate him, if Covington comes through Lawler, it’s difficult to argue against him getting the next title shot. If he get past Lawler, make Usman vs Covington and put Edwards vs Masvidal on the card. And then have the winner face the winner. That would be a fun night.

Do you think Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal should fight next?
