Malignaggi To McGregor: “If I See You, I’m Going To Smack You”

Paulie Malignaggi and Conor McGregor have a history that goes back to their infamous sparring session two years ago, in the lead up to McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather. Ever since then, the two have gone back and forth with each other in interviews and on social media. (You can remind yourself of some of those exchanges here, here, here, here, here and here.)

You may have thought that Malinaggi losing to McGregor’s close friend and teammate Artem Lobov, at BKFC 6 back in June would have brought an end to the feud but that certainly doesn’t seem to be the case. Speaking on BT Sport at Ultimate Boxxer 5 this past weekend, the 38 year old discussed being asked if he’d still fight McGregor.

“They ask me if I’m going to fight him. What am I going to say, no? Of course I’m going to fight him. I don’t like you dude, I don’t like you. If I see you, I’m going to smack you. So of course I’m going to say I’m going to fight him. But it’s not really going to happen. He would rather fight sixty year old men.

“Remember one thing, I was in his face two years ago, in his face. And you know what I told him. In his face and he did nothing. A sixty year old man doesn’t want a shot and he gets hit. Remember, shows you the character of the man. The punk that he is.”

McGregor has hinted that he could box again but it is thought that the former UFC two division champion will return to the Octagon at UFC 245 or more likely, the beginning of 2020. Right now, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje are the favourites to welcome the Irishman back to the cage.

McGregor fighting Malignaggi is unlikely in any capacity but stranger things have happened in the world of combat sports. It would certainly create a buzz amongst fans.
