Masvidal Wants To Fight In 2020, Comments On Burns Getting Title Shot

Although things between Jorge Masvidal and the UFC are not at their best, he is hopeful of getting a chance to fight this year. The BMF’s public beef with the UFC over fighter pay has been in the headlines from past few weeks.

Speaking to his fans on his YouTube channel (transcribed by TheMacLife), Masvidal opened up on his wish to fight, but made it clear that he is still standing his ground on the pay issue.

“Yeah, I’m gonna fight this year. God willing, I’m gonna fight this year. What’s not gonna happen is I’m not gonna be played or underpaid, that’s for sure,” Masvidal said. “I have a value, a formula we can come up with for what I’m worth and that comes off 16 years of doing this. I’ve seen the field in and out, I’m not some rookie. I’m not some guy challenging for the title for the first time in my life. I’ve been in this position before, in different organisations and stuff and we know how to calculate what I bring in.

“I want a fair share of what I bring in. For those know-it-alls online that are saying why would I make more or less on this fight, it’s not about that. It’s about how much I want to receive from the pay-per-view. How much share I want from the pay-per-view. That’s one of the things I’m fighting about. I don’t think that cut is fair and I don’t agree with it.”

For Masvidal, it’s just the money that matters and not the name of the opponent for his next fight.

“I want a fight that brings money to the table. I don’t give a f*** what their name is,” Masvidal added.

After ‘Gamebred’ refused to fight for what UFC offered to pay him for a title fight against the welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, he was replaced by Gilbert Burns. The Brazilian is now set to challenge his friend and teammate at UFC 251 for the belt. According to Masvidal, this is a strategy used by the UFC to pay less to their fighters and find someone who would fight for the “least possible amount”.

“There’s not much to say,” Masvidal said. “They promised me a spot for numerous months and they only wanted me to have the spot and after the fight, a lot of revelations have come out as to how much they put into me wanting for me to be a part of the event.

“But they offer considerably less money than what I should be getting, and it doesn’t work, and then they offer the guy the least amount of money who would take it. So that’s what they do. They offer[ed the fight to me] and then after I said no, they offered a couple other people until they got to Gilbert. Gilbert wasn’t their first name. Nobody on a worldwide scale knows him. I’m not dissing his skillset, he’s just not a known guy.

“Of course he took the lowest amount of money to fight for a title. He can do whatever he wants with his time and his skillset and so can I. I want to get paid for mine. I don’t have anything positive or negative to say about the fight that’s coming up, I don’t care. I’m just worried about me.”

As negotiations were breaking down for the title fight, Masvidal had turned his attention to Nate Diaz for a rematch. Although the speculations for the ‘BMF’ rematch have seemed to slow down, Jorge reveals that it’s still on his wish list, but only if he is paid his “worth”.

“I hate to sound redundant, but if we get our worth, it doesn’t matter who it is. I love the fight. I always get told don’t say that, because you know why, they expect me to do it for cheaper. Damn near free,” Masvidal said. “I love to compete in the sport that I do, but I’ve been doing it for a long time and I’ve been in the shadows studying, learning. What makes this guy be able to get that much money, that whole planning, we’ve been doing it for a while. We have a formula, just like I do for fighting I have a formula for the business side of it.

“If they don’t want to pay me what I’m worth, it’s cool, man. I’m set for life. I don’t have to fight, I fight because I love it. … I don’t have to f***ing fight. I don’t. I love to do this s***, but I’m going to get paid every f***ing time I do it. If it’s Nate’s ass, if it’s whoever the f*** it is. It doesn’t matter. Just pay me what the f*** I’m worth.

“Of course, I would love to f***ing fight with Nate just because I didn’t get to put him to sleep how I wanted to.”

If Jorge Masvidal can come to an amicable agreement with the UFC, who would you like to see ‘Gamebred’ face next?
