Max Holloway Has A Dig At McGregor, Says He’ll Fight Cormier

You know a UFC rivalry is serious, when it spills out of the Octagon and into the world of the ‘Bottle Cap Challenge’. And that’s exactly what we have on our hands with Max Holloway and Conor McGregor.

Ahead of UFC 240, where he will defend his featherweight title against Frankie Edgar, Holloway spoke to a media scrum in Los Angeles. When asked about his ‘Bottle Cap Challenge’, the 145lbs champion had a little dig at McGregor, mocking him for his attempt. And he couldn’t help but throw a little extra shade my mentioning the fact that the Irish man has never defended a title.

“McGregor’s? If you talk about it, Conor when he kicked it, his bottle cap when straight off. Mine kept on spinning and spinning and stayed on. It is preferences. Some people win championship belts, some people defend them, it is whatever they want.”

Holloway and McGregor fought in 2013, in the a UFC featherweight contest. On the night, McGregor got the win over the then 21 year old, via unanimous decision. Although McGregor would go on to win the featherweight title and then the lightweight title, Holloway went on to dominate the 145lbs division, winning his last 13 bouts in the division.

Not content with the being the UFC featherweight king, Holloway moved up to lightweight in his last outing but came up just short against Dustin Poirier, losing via unanimous decision at UFC 236.

And it seems like ‘Blessed’ has no intention of stopping at lightweight. During the media scrum in LA, the 27 year old said he’d be willing to enter the Octagon with the UFC heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier.

“If I got the call to fight DC in August, I’d look into it. I’d figure out a way. We’re fighters. Back in the olden day, these guys didn’t walk around with scales and be like, ‘Hey, wait. I can’t fight you, you’re half a pound over me. You got me.’ No, these guys just fought. And that’s what true warriors do.

“After this fight, if they call me out for August to fight DC, guess what? I’m weighing around 210, 220 pounds, I’ll make that walk and I’ll fight him. You know what I mean? There’s no time in this. If you want to be the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world, I don’t think you should use weight as an excuse or anything really as an excuse. You just show up to fight.”
