Max Holloway To Defend Title Against Alex Volkanovski At UFC 245
Max Holloway is set to defend his UFC featherweight title against Alex Volkanovski at UFC 245, on December 14th at the T-Mobile Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Holloway is coming off a successful title defence against Frankie Edgar in July. The Hawaiian won via unanimous decision at UFC 240, to defend the 145lbs belt for a third time. Prior to the 27 year old’s latest title defence, ‘Blessed’ was defeated by Dustin Poirier at UFC 236, while fighting for the UFC interim lightweight title. The loss ended Holloway’s run of thirteen straight wins, since losing to Conor McGregor in 2013.
Volkanovski has a perfect 7-0 record in the UFC and is coming off the biggest win of his career, a unanimous decision win over former champion Jose Aldo, at UFC 237. The Australian former rugby player has now amassed a 20-1 record, winning his last seventeen. The 30 year old hasn’t lost since 2013.
Volkanovski’s countryman Robert Whittaker will defend his UFC middleweight title against the interim champion Israel Adesanya, next month at UFC 243. After Volkanovski’s win over Aldo in May, it was expected that he would challenge Holloway on the same card as Whittaker vs Adesanya, but Holloway was given Edgar in July and UFC 243 came around a little too soon for the featherweight champion.
Holloway vs Volkanovski is the second title fight set for UFC 245, with Amanda Nunes set to defend her bantamweight title against Germaine de Randamie. It is reported that the UFC are planning a third title fight on the card.
With two huge fights for Whittaker and Volkanovski coming up in the upcoming months, Australia could end 2019 with two UFC champions.
