Mendez: Miocic vs Cormier Winner Will Be Offered ‘Big Money Fight’
Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic will face off for the third and final time at UFC 252, with the UFC heavyweight title at stake. Aside from ending a historic rivalry and being named ‘the greatest heavyweight of all time‘, American Kickboxing Academy head coach Javier Mendez, believes even more could be on the line.
‘Big Money Fight’
While speaking with ESPN, (transcribed by Bloody Elbow) Mendez suggested that the winner this weekend will be offered a huge money fight with Jon Jones.
“Whoever is victorious from the fight is gonna get offered a big money fight,” Mendez stated. “And I believe it’s gonna be against Jon Jones because Jon Jones has stressed he wants to go to heavyweight. And what better way for Jones to the kind of money he wants than to fight a Stipe or a DC for the heavyweight title.”
Jones is currently sitting on the sidelines, as a result of failed negotiations for the light heavyweight champion to move up to heavyweight and fight Francis Ngannou. However, Mendez believes the winner of the UFC 252 main event will be able to entice ‘Bones’ back into the Octagon.
Jon Jones At Heavyweight
“That would make the fight that Jones would want,” Mendez said. “Obviously, he deserves more money, he’s a major star, and he’s the most decorated guy really in the light heavyweight division. He’s never been beat. So I think it’s a logical choice.”
Although Cormier has stated repeatedly that the trilogy with Miocic will be his retirement fight regardless of outcome, Miocic recently stated that he’s interested in welcoming Jones to the heavyweight division.
“I definitely think it would be a great fight for him, and I think I’d walk out [the champion]. He’s in a different weight class and I think I’d do well. I know I’d do well,” Miocic told Line Movement.
Do you think we could see the winner of Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier go on to defend the title against Jon Jones?
