Mike Tyson: My Kids Think I Shouldn’t Fight But What Do They Know?

Boxing legends Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. have decided to come out of retirement, and will face each other in an exhibition boxing match on September 12th at the Dignity Health Sports Park, in Carson, California.

Although the rules are yet to be completely clarified, we know that the two veterans will fight for eight rounds, they will not wear any headgear, they will probably use 12oz gloves, and the bout will not have any judges. The only method of victory will be a stoppage.

Addressing Health Concerns

Many have expressed their concerns about 54 year-old Tyson coming out of retirement, and fighting Jones Jr., due to the potential health risks involved. Those include his close friend, the UFC president Dana White; and the former two-time heavyweight world boxing champion, George Foreman.

Speaking on the Jimmy Fallon show (transcript by The Mac Life), ‘Iron’ Mike however, semi-jokingly stated that he won’t even listen to his own children advising him not to step into the ring again.

“Well, my kids think I should sit my old ass down,” Tyson said. “But what do they know? I’m very confident, of course. They don’t know how to fight. Neither one of my kids can beat me in a fight, so what are they talking about?”

Excited For The Comeback

Tyson is happy for the opportunity to face Jones Jr., a man he wanted to fight a very long time ago.

“I’m so happy coming back into the ring facing Roy Jones on September 12,” he said. “It’s going to be so awesome. He’s the greatest fighter of his generation, and I’m the greatest fighter of my generation.

“It’s just a no-brainer that we should clash together … No, we planned on fighting [many years ago], but it never happened, but the opportunity came now. I don’t know how it came back. I started training.

“… From this experience right now, I’ll never call another fighter a bum again, because anybody that does this or attempts to do this is no bum.”
