ONE Championship Is Heading To Brazil

ONE Championship continues to bigger and bigger. And now, in the latest exciting news, it has been announced that ONE will be heading around the other side of the world, to Brazil.

Gazeta Esportiva’s Bruno Massami has reported that a meeting has taken place between the Rio de Janeiro Governor Wilson Witzel and the Mayor of São Paulo Bruno Covas, in which it was announced that ONE Championship would be holding an event in one of Brazil’s major cities.

Moments ago Massami shared a screenshot from Vitor Belfort’s Instagram story, celebrating the news, onto Twitter.

Bruno also posted this video in Portuguese of Witzel and Belfort yesterday, onto Facebook, with the following caption:

“Big News!

Governor of Rio de Janeiro’s state, @wilsonwitzel announce a big partnership with @vitorbelfort and @ONEChampionship to bring the event to Rio for the first time.

Major news to MMA in Brazil!

Congrats to all people involved on that.”

Belfort signed with ONE earlier this year but is yet to make his debut in the promotion. It is expected that Belfort will make his debut on the Brazil card. It is understood that although the former UFC champion wants to make his ONE debut this year, he will have to wait until 2020 if he wants to make his debut in his home country. The Brazilian has said previously that he wants his debut to be against boxing legend, Roy Jones Jr..

ONE Championship is also expected to have its first show in the United States next year, with New York the likely location.

UPDATE:

Tatame has reported the event is likely to go down in November or February, but most likely it will be in February. They have also reported that they are looking at venues with a capacity of 30,000 or 40,000 in São Paulo. And that Vitor could face Jones Jr. in the main event.
