Robert Whittaker Undergoes Dual Surgery, Releases Statement

Robert Whittaker was scheduled to face Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 234 in the main event for the UFC Middleweight Championship. However, just hours before the fight, the champion was pulled from the card, and it was then revealed that Whittaker had to undergo emergency surgery.

Whittaker was pulled from the card in Australia last year as well due to an injury. While it was reported that Robert Whittaker was pulled due to hernia, his team has since released a statement, revealing the champion had to undergo dual surgery.

“Last night at roughly 9 PM, Rob began experiencing intense abdominal pains that were brought to the attention of the UFC doctors”, the statement read. “After several hours of observation he was admitted to the hospital at 3 AM. Rob is just out of dual surgery for a twister and collapsed bowel in addition to an internal hernia of the intestine, and will be recovering in hospital for several days.”

Furthermore, the statement also revealed that the middleweight champion wanted to fight regardless, but was forbidden from doing so. “Up until 5 minutes before going into surgery, Rob was insisting he would fight, but advice was that a blow to his stomach could be fatal.”
