UFC 247 went down on Saturday night at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The second pay-per-view card of 2020 saw two titles on the line. In the main event, Jon Jones somehow managed to defend his UFC light heavyweight title against Dominick Reyes.
Despite appearing to win the first three rounds, Reyes found himself on the wrong end of a 48-47, 48-47, 49-46 unanimous decision. Jones now has fourteen title fight wins in the UFC, more than anyone else. With the controversial finish, there will no doubt be calls for an immediate rematch.
On a night full of crazy decision, Valentina Shevchenko didn’t allow her fight to go the distance in the UFC 247 co-main event against Katlyn Chookagian. ‘The Bullet’ TKO’d her opponent in the third round, after another impressive performance. The question is now, is there a worthy opponent for the champion in the women’s flyweight division?
Elsewhere on the UFC 247 card, Justin Tafa scored a TKO victory over Juan Adams and Derrick Lewis edged a unanimous decision win against Ilir Latifi, both in the heavyweight division.
There were also four split decisions at UFC 247, breaking the record. Including Trevin Giles win over James Krause, who accepted the fight on one day’s notice, after Antonio Arroyo was forced out of the fight on Friday between the weigh-ins in the morning and ceremonial weigh-ins in the evening.

So we running it back in LA or Vegas? @JonnyBones #rematch #champvschamp #pplschamp @ufc

Dominic’s absolute best moment in round two, give me those defensive points, I’ll take that. pic.twitter.com/Tv3Q7HmvQp

I love how whenever I have a competitive fight everyone claims the other guy won. Guess it just comes with the territory https://t.co/9vzXzvN1Xd
— Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) February 12, 2020
Dominic out struck me by literally 12 shots. I scored the take downs, was the aggressor, control the octagon every round, had more significant strikes landed.. Dom completely stopped fighting in the championship rounds and has the audacity to be mad at the judges. ??????
— Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) February 12, 2020
Don’t be mad at the judges, be mad at Dom’s conditioning guy. man started to give up when the water got deep and is now going around doing interviews talking about being robbed. When will these young boys start taking responsibility ????? that’s what’s wrong with boys these days.
— Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) February 12, 2020
At the end of the day, I got to be a part of another classic. I’m over here in ABQ smiling from ear to ear. Having fights like that tickles my pickle, it makes me feel so alive. Makes me feel like a man. Especially when you display having balls the way I did, nothing but a win
— Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) February 12, 2020
And I know my haters are pissed, which also makes me really happy lol

Fights like those are the ones fans never forget. What a way to make history

I don’t think people realize how many ways this has been a blessing for me. Humbling, record-breaking, financially, a new rival, got to bring out the dog. #UFC247 is what it’s all about ??

Not robbery. Close fight, could have gone either way. 3-1 or 2-2 going into 5th. I thought 3-2 Reyes but the fight was so close it could have gone either way.

— Eddie Alvarez (@Ealvarezfight) February 9, 2020
????????????????????????? #UFC247
— Tatiana Suarez (@tatianaufc) February 9, 2020
I had Reyes in the first three rounds. Credit to Jones on coming on strong 4th and 5th but I would of guessed Reyes won that fight on scorecards.

49-46 wtf was that person watching. My gawd! #UFC247
— Tatiana Suarez (@tatianaufc) February 9, 2020
Really came down to how judges called round 3. Reyes fought extremely well. Came out hot. Seeing a Jones that isn’t fighting with the same creativity he had before. Still game but this Jones is a little too predictable in 2019/2020. #UFC246
— Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) February 9, 2020
Jones winning this fight isn’t crazy but a 49-46 scorecard for Jones is. #UFC246
— Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) February 9, 2020
I found the judge who who scored 49-46 for Jones. #UFC247 pic.twitter.com/8TIp29jO8Z

— Garry Tonon (@Garry_Tonon) February 9, 2020
I can’t wait to fight again. Every card makes me want to cry. ? Those shiny lights and beautiful octagon ???
— Tatiana Suarez (@tatianaufc) February 9, 2020
Is our sport the only major sport where you don't see score until game is over? What would harm be in judges showing their scores after each round? Honest question not a diss
— Max Holloway (@BlessedMMA) February 9, 2020
— Israel Adesanya (@stylebender) February 9, 2020
Helluva fight from @DomReyes and one day he’ll be a GREAT @ufc champion. Congrats @JonnyBones, the GOAT on his record setting performance. Huge respect to you both. Great night of fights!
— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) February 9, 2020
?????? #UFC247
Dana White had the fight 48-47 for Reyes, but acknowledged there were dissenting opinions throughout the promotion.
— Aaron Bronsteter (@aaronbronsteter) February 9, 2020
He said that former matchmaker Joe Silva scored it a draw.
This train of thought is nuts man, I have no idea how this still gets repeated over and over. It’s a fight between two people. The person who does most damage wins the fight. Just be happy got a great fight tonight. It was close fight https://t.co/A8EFSnEwx4
— Daniel Cormier (@dc_mma) February 9, 2020
Dom won rounds 1-3 clearly…never been more proud of you bro @DomReyes
— Curtis Blaydes (@RazorBlaydes265) February 9, 2020
Wow @ufc like you couldn’t seem more corrupt! Jon Jones did NOT win that fight. 3 rounds to 2, for Reyes and that can’t be argued! TRASH! You stole that from the man the earned it. Terrible!
— Jamie Varner (@jamievarner) February 9, 2020
a Jv high school athlete almost beat Jon Jones just imagine what i would do to him ?
— Dillon Danis (@dillondanis) February 9, 2020
He’s chasing . Everyone using footwork and movement against him . Smith , Thiago , Reyes all fought him the same . You can’t stand in front cause he’s longer . If he just stays in the center and make opponents fight it’ll look different for him I think. https://t.co/1O6MQlitat
— Derek Brunson (@DerekBrunson) February 9, 2020
Let’s be honest Mma needs an intelligent scoring system . I think a point system would be best . Strikes , takedowns , submission attempts , fight finishing attempts, octagon control . Score it all up and there’s the winning per round . Too subjective currently ! ?
— Derek Brunson (@DerekBrunson) February 9, 2020

I know I'm wrong to do what I do because I'm not a trained judge but I will always weight later rounds more heavily than earlier ones. I ask myself who would survive a no time/rule encounter. Because of that it was a clear @JonnyBones victory for me. https://t.co/OLSelSU4QG

I Agree with Cruz. Glad The beast won but these judges tonight should be fired.
— Sam Alvey (@smilensam) February 9, 2020
Mannn Cruz needs to chill TF out with that statement. 3 TDs with ZERO damage. Idc who it is, if you take someone down and do nothing on top, and the other guy lands more significant shots on the feet, he “should” win, pending how much ground control time he has IMHO#UFC247
— Aljamain Sterling (@funkmasterMMA) February 9, 2020
Word! And I really like Latifi, but he needs to make that one adjustment and he’d be nursing guys with that TD game of his. You can’t keep absorbing damage throughout the fight, to get TDs and not return the damage favors. https://t.co/0FZqLMEIFC

Oh and iffy as hell on that latifi decision ? #UFC247
