Tony Ferguson Hints He Could Be Back Up For Holloway vs Poirier

Tony Ferguson recently passed on the opportunity to fight for the UFC interim lightweight title. And to a certain extent you can’t blame him. He had previously won the interim title, with a win over Kevin Lee at UFC 216 but was stripped of it, when he tore his fibular collateral ligament in his knee, in a freak incident one week before he was due to face Khabib Nurmagomedov for the undisputed title.

With Tony passing on the opportunity, the UFC made Dustin Poirier vs the UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway, instead.

The decision to pass on the opportunity left a big question mark over ‘El Cucuy’ and where he goes from here. UFC President Dana White, promised the winner of the interim title, the next shot at Khabib. Probably at the end of the year.

Now it appears that Ferguson has hinted that he may be willing to step in if either Poirier or Holloway get injured, before their main event at next month’s UFC 236.

The last time we saw Ferguson inside the Octagon, he came back from the injury that forced him out of the Khabib fight, with an incredibly impressive and entertaining win over the former champion Anthony Pettis, last October.

Ferguson has previously said that he’s only willing to fight for the title. With how the situation is unfolding in the UFC lightweight division, it’ll be interesting to see where he goes from here.
