Tyron Woodley Says He’s Agreed To Fight Colby Covington At UFC 249

There is no love lost between Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington. After all the drama that went down ahead of UFC London last month, it looked like the two would finally meet inside the Octagon. However, as the coronavirus pandemic worsen, the card was completely postponed in the end.

Fast forward a few weeks and there is speculation that Woodley and Covington could again try to save a UFC event. This time, UFC 249. After Khabib Nurmagomedov all but ruled himself out of fighting on the card earlier this week, several big name fighters offered to step in and save the card.

Dustin Poirier and Santiago Ponzinibbio were two of the fighters who offered to step in and face Tony Ferguson on April 18th. Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal offered to fight each other and then both accused the other of ducking the other.

Within hours of Khabib stating that he was stuck in Russia, both Woodley and Covington took to social media to call each other out, just one minute apart. Tyron has since told Colby that he either fights him now, or he’ll never fight him.

And in the last few hours, Woodley has taken to social media to say that he has agreed terms with the UFC to fight Covington at UFC 249. Saying that the ball is now in Colby’s court.

Woodley is managed by First Round Management, led by the brothers, Abe and Malki Kawa. Not long after Tyron’s tweet, Malki confirmed that he had spoken to UFC match maker Sean Shelby and that it was now up to Covington.

Although Malki isn’t confident that Covington will accept the fight on two weeks notice.

Meanwhile, Gilbert Burns, who has been campaigning to fight Woodley, took to social media to mock ‘The Chosen One’.

Speaking to MMA Junkie before Woodley’s latest tweet, Burns hit out at the former UFC welterweight champion.

“He knows already; the UFC said out of the top guys, I’m the guy available. He said, ‘I want to fight Colby.’ Colby is not available. He said no. He keeps playing these games on social media and I don’t like that. … I don’t want to be the guy, ‘Oh, I’ll beat you up.’ Just sign the contract and fight.”

Woodley was scheduled to fight Leon Edwards in the UFC London main event last month. The last time he stepped inside the Octagon was thirteen months ago, when he lost the belt to Kamaru Usman. Covington’s last fight was also against Usman, losing to the champion last December at UFC 245.

Currently UFC 249 doesn’t have a location. And with the world on lockdown as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, there are many saying that the card should be postponed. Despite the criticism, UFC president Dana White has continued to push on, insisting the fans need to be entertained.

Would you like to see Tyron Woodley vs Colby Covington headline UFC 249? Or do you think it’s time to postpone the whole card?
