Tyson Fury Promises Early Finish Against Anthony Joshua

Tyson Fury promises to finish Anthony Joshua early whenever they finally step foot in the ring together.

Joshua TKO’d Kubrat Pulev in the ninth round last month to successfully defend his IBF, WBA, IBO and WBO titles. Fury, on the other hand, has been involved in a tug of war with Deontay Wilder over a trilogy fight, but Bob Arum believes ‘The Bronze Bomber’ has no legal right to a third fight with ‘The Gypsy King’.

Joshua Is Running Scared

While Wilder fights his case in court, Fury is already looking ahead and hopes to battle Joshua in the ring sooner rather than later. Speaking to Fox Miami (as transcribed by The Mac Life), the undefeated boxer weighed in on a potential showdown with ‘AJ’.

“This fight has been brewing for a long time,” Fury said. “They have been avoiding me for a long time and now it’s finally got to happen. They either run away from the fight and announce it publicly, or take the fight. Either way it’s a lose-lose situation for him.”

After beating Pulev, Joshua warned Fury of his mean intentions, saying that he wanted to take the WBC heavyweight champion’s “head off his shoulders”. But the 32 year old isn’t too concerned about the threats.

“It’s a nice quote. It doesn’t mean anything. It’s sticks and stones. People say a lot of stuff and they don’t back it up, so we’ll see,” Fury explained. “I’ve never seen him take anybody’s head off anybody’s shoulders in all of his 22 fights. Probably a lie. Another lie. We’ll see if he’s got the guts to try and do it when I’m stood in the ring in front of him. I don’t believe he has.”

Confidence Issues

After his shock TKO loss to Andy Ruiz in 2019, Joshua has gone on to win two fights in a row, settling the score with the Mexican in the rematch before beating Pulev decisively. However, Fury isn’t too impressed with the Olympic gold medalist’s recent performances, and believes that he’s in better form than his rival.

“I don’t think he’s as good as people crack him up to be, or he doesn’t believe he is, in his own self. He’s got a confidence issue,” Fury claimed. “He’s coming off two shaky performances. Boxing is all about who is in form and who isn’t. On his last two fights he’s not in form, on mine I am. Momentum is with me and I just believe I take him out early, very early. Maybe even one round, two rounds.”

“The Fight Is Virtually There”

According to Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn, we can look forward to seeing the fight in May or June. Speaking to IFL TV, the Matchroom Boxing main man said that the deal has been agreed between the two parties.

“I think it’s hotting up nicely,” Hearn said. “The mind games are starting. ‘AJ’ is working tirelessly away in London and I think Tyson has gone to Miami to train and I think ‘AJ’ will be going somewhere to train soon as well.

“I think everything is great. There’s been conversations every day for the last two weeks on that fight. A lot of the travelling I’ve been doing lately has been looking at where that fight can be staged as well. As we have done for a long time, we have an agreement on that fight. We have an agreement, which was agreed a long time ago. Nothing has changed. We are not looking to go back on that agreement, I don’t think Tyson Fury is looking to go back on that agreement.

“We’re in the position now of drafting paperwork to try and move forwards with that fight so I think from a pandemic point of view it’s difficult because the world is changing every day,” Hearn continued. “One minute something is opening, another something is closing. But that fight is planned for the end of May, early June and I don’t see anything getting in the way of it.

“We’ve been drafting contracts, it’s not signed but the deal has been agreed for a long time, we’ve confirmed that in writing. I feel like the fight is virtually there, to be honest with you. We’re in the final stages of everything that’s got to be worked out. There have been meetings taking place on where this fight is going to be held. There’s various countries. I’ve visited a few of them in the last few weeks and days and I think we’re in a good position. There’s some wacky stuff. There’s some stuff you’d expect and again, I know everyone wants it in the UK but at the moment they aren’t even allowing boxing so we’ve got a long way to go.”
