UFC: Dana White On Floyd Mayweather, Tyson Fury And Zuffa Boxing

Dana White has given an update on Zuffa Boxing. And while there have been hurdles to overcome, the UFC president confirmed that he still has full confidence in the new project. Dana also confirmed that he will be working with Floyd Mayweather this year and that Tyson Fury could very well fight in the UFC.

Speaking to The Mac Life ahead of UFC 246, Dana said that he couldn’t go into details, regarding the hurdles that Zuffa Boxing has had to deal with, but did state that he believed it will be a massive player in the boxing world in the next couple of years.

“I can’t really get into the troubles that I’m having. It’s not anything I didn’t expect or see coming. It’s just taking longer than I expected to deal with this stuff. And I’m not jumping in head first, I’m taking my time with this. Never did I say I was the guy to fix this and I’ll have this turned around in no time. It’s going to be a eight to ten year play.

“I believe that I have set up everything the right way. I believe that I have the right people in place. I believe that I have the backing of most of the guys that are involved in boxing. So this is going to play out over the next couple of years and I truly do believe that we will be a massive player in boxing in the next couple of years.”

Although Dana has been a little secretive, when it comes to Zuffa Boxing, he and Floyd Mayweather both confirmed last November that they will work together this year.

“Obviously Floyd is still a huge name, a huge draw and one of the biggest guys in all of boxing right now. And I think that I can add value to him and he believes he can add value to what I want to do. We pretty much agreed that day at the basketball game to do business together. We’ll probably start talking this summer.”

Asked if working together would see Mayweather come out of retirement, Dana again confirmed that it’s looking that way.

“Yeah, but I think there’s lots of things we could do together. Yeah, that’s definitely one of them. I think he believes he’s still a big draw, and I do too. And we think together, which we’ve already proved, will blow it out of the water. We’ll try to do that again this year.”

With Mayweather set to come out of retirement and Conor McGregor stating this week that he wants a rematch with Floyd, Dana dismissed the idea of the two fighting again this year.

“Not right now, no.”

Dana however did state that if Tyson Fury is serious about switching to MMA, then he’s the man to make it happen.

“I like Tyson. My thing was — he’s the top one or two guys in all of boxing right now. Why even think about MMA when you’re number one or number two in boxing right now. But if that’s what he wants to do, listen, far be it from me to be the guy to say no. So if he wants to come over here and play around, we’ll see what happens.

“I don’t know [who he’d fight]. It would have to come to fruition for me to realise at that point in time what would I do and who would I do it with. Obviously, if the number one or two guy in the world in boxing wants to dabble in MMA, we’re the people to do it with. We’ll see. When that time comes we’ll see what the landscape looks like and what he wants to do.”
