UFC: Din Thomas Looks Back At Amanda Nunes vs Ronda Rousey

UFC veteran Din Thomas, has fought some of the biggest names in MMA, but even after his retirement in 2013, he remains a staple coach for some of the sport’s greatest athletes.

Most notably, Amanda Nunes. Going into her bantamweight title defence against Ronda Rousey at UFC 207, ‘The Lioness’ was as high as a +180 underdog. This confused Thomas, as he saw multiple holes in Rousey’s standup game.

Speaking to MMA Junkie Radio, Thomas explained how they were able to expose these holes, resulting in Nunes making quick work of the former champion, finishing her in 48 seconds of the very first round, and ultimately retiring the former bantamweight queen.

“I think the first one that I really invested so much into, that I put into, was Amanda and Ronda Rousey. And this was when I was like, ‘This is a fool’s bet.’ Because Amanda was the underdog in that fight, I think. After studying Ronda, I realised that she was ‘smoke and mirrors,’ is what I could say, and she wasn’t as good as everybody thought she was. She did some things better than everybody else, but she wasn’t as good as everybody thought she was.

“So I put a lot of effort into that, and I watched her, and I saw that she would throw punches at the same time with two different hands, and she was really awkward in certain spots. So I was like, ‘Wow, this is gonna be a really easy fight for Amanda.’ And it turned out to be a really easy fight for Amanda.”

Despite his recent separation from American Top Team, Thomas still coaches Tyron Woodley and is expected to be in his corner when he faces off against Gilbert Burns this weekend, at the UFC APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Were you surprised when Amanda Nunes beat Ronda Rousey so easily?
