UFC: Dustin Poirier Already In Training Camp For Tony Ferguson

Dustin Poirier bounced back from his loss to Khabib Nurmagomdov in spectacular fashion at UFC Vegas 4, earning a unanimous decision win over Dan Hooker in a contender for Fight of the Year. The win put the number two ranked UFC lightweight back into title contention. With Justin Gaethje scheduled to face ‘The Eagle’ at UFC 254, ‘The Diamond’ is set to fight Tony Ferguson on the same card.

Despite UFC president Dana White announcing that the fan favourite matchup is set to be the co-main event at UFC 254, Poirier has stated that he still hasn’t heard any news directly from the UFC yet. Speaking on the UFC Unfiltered podcast (as transcribed by MMA Fighting), the 31 year old said that he is yet to receive a contract for the fight.

“I don’t have a contract yet,” Poirier said. “I saw Dana talking about it. I know that they want it. I know they want it on the same card as Khabib and Gaethje. I’m just waiting. I’m just waiting to talk to them.”

Already In Fight Camp

While nothing has been made official, the fight is likely to take place on the October 24th card on Fight Island. Poirier stated that he is already in fight camp, having returned to American Top Team as soon as he heard rumours of the fight.

“When the rumbling started, when they started talking about it, I booked the flight. I’m in Florida right now,” Poirier said. “I just got done with wrestling practice a couple of hours ago. I came to Coconut Creek. We’re eight weeks out this week, so better safe than sorry. Dana knows my number. If we get this fight made, I’m already here, training. If not, I fly back to Louisiana and we’ll see what happens.”

“Lightweight Tournament”

There’s a good chance that the winner of Poirier vs Ferguson will face the winner of Khabib vs Gaethje, for the lightweight title.

“If they do it on the same night, it’s like a lightweight tournament. First bracket.”

Who do you think will leave the Octagon victorious, Dustin Poirier or Tony Ferguson?
