UFC: Eddie Alvarez Breaks Down Conor McGregor vs Justin Gaethje

Having fought both Conor McGregor and Justin Gaethje, former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, is the perfect person to break down a potential clash between the two lightweights.

Having lost the 155lbs title to McGregor in 2016, Alvarez beat Gaethje a year later, in the current UFC interim lightweight champion’s second fight in the UFC.

Speaking to theScore (as transcribed by MMA Junkie), Alvarez broke down the potential matchup between McGregor and Gaethje.

“I think a Knockout. I was able to catch him (Gaethje) a little bit with punches… Dustin was able to box him a little bit,” Alvarez said.

While predicting a McGregor win, Alvarez isn’t ruling out a Gaethje win. Especially if he implements the right game plan.

“The thing with Justin, if I thought he was going to implement a ground game and go in there and take Conor McGregor down and put him against the cage and do what Khabib did, or do what I intended to do, if he was going to implement that game, I would say, ‘Justin is going to do really well against him. Just standing for standing, is what I feel like it’ll end up being, there’s just too many mistakes Justin would end up making and Conor would be able to kind of capitalise.”

‘The Highlight’ is fresh off the biggest win of his career, a fifth round TKO win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 249, which earned him the UFC interim lightweight title. Gaethje went into UFC 249 off the back of three straight first round knockout finishes inside the Octagon.

Gaethje is now set to face Khabib Nurmagomedov, later in the year to unify the UFC lightweight title. While McGregor is currently without an opponent.

How do you see a matchup between Justin Gaethje and Conor McGregor goes down?
