UFC: Figueiredo Is Focused On Benavidez But Has An Eye On Cejudo

Deiveson Figueiredo is coming off of a second-round knockout over Joseph Benavidez at UFC Norfolk. The fight was scheduled for the vacant UFC flyweight title, after Henry Cejudo vacated the belt at the end of 2019. However the Brazilian missed weight and was illegible to win the title.

UFC president Dana White has since stated that the two will rematch. And with the feeling of a champion, Figueiredo cannot wait to get his hands on Benavidez again.

“I’m very focused on this rematch. He deserves this rematch. He made the fight happen, even though I was not on weight. So let’s face it again, and I’ll catch him again,” Figueiredo told MMA Junkie.

Figueiredo seemed the better fighter off the bat in the first fight, successfully taking the number two contender down in the first minute. He almost went on to finish the fight via an armbar, but Benavidez managed to get out of it. In the second round, Joseph’s recklessness resulted in ‘Daico’ getting the knockout finish.

“We already expected that he would try and beat me up, and we knew at that at some point he would try to take the fight to the ground. But I was prepared for everything,” Figueiredo said. “I was focused on knocking him out, and there was no other.”

After UFC Norfolk, the former champ Henry Cejudo, hinted that he may return to the 125lbs division. And should ‘Triple C’ come back down, Figueiredo says he’ll be waiting for him.

“If Cejudo one day wants to come back [to flyweight], I will be waiting for him,” Figueiredo said. “One day, I will own the belt of the two [divisions] – my [division] and that of Cejudo (bantamweight). Believe me. God is with me.”

After Figueiredo missed weight at UFC Norfolk, many people thought that should the Brazilian win, the UFC flyweight division would be in danger of being scrapped. But Deiveson believes he may just be its saviour of the UFC’s 125lbs division.

“The division will never end, I will save this category,” Figueiredo said. “I will always make aggressive fights, I will take the audience to their maximum delirium. I will always make it happen. We will have the rematch, me and Benavidez. The division will not end … I’m talking: Believe me.”
