UFC Minneapolis Gets A New Main Event

A few days ago we reported that Tyron Woodley has been forced out of his fight with Robbie Lawler. The rematch between the two was scheduled for the main event at UFC Minneapolis.

Despite a hat full of names offering to step in to replace Woodley, including Darren Till, Mike Perry and Alexander Shlemenko, it looks like Lawler will wait for a new opponent and a new date. You can read more about why Woodley pulled out of the fight here.

Having lost its original main event, ESPN has reported that Junior dos Santos vs Francis Ngannou will now headline the card on June 29th. The heavyweights were scheduled to meet one week later at UFC 239.

Since losing to Stipe Miocic two years ago, when challenging for the UFC heavyweight title, dos Santos has won all three fights. With his most recent win coming in March, where the former heavyweight champion beat Derrick Lewis via a second round TKO at UFC Wichita.

Having lost back to back fights for the first time in his career against Stipe Miocic and Derrick Lewis, Ngannou has looked impressive in his last two outings, earning first round TKOs over Curtis Blaydes and Cain Velazquez.

The current UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, defends his title against Miocic at UFC 241 on August 17th. And there’s every chance that the winner of dos Santos and Ngannou will face the winner.

UFC Minneapolis will take place at The Target Center in Minneapolis.
