Vitor Belfort Compares Fight With Roy Jones Jr To Ali vs Foreman

ONE Championship continues to makes headlines all around the world and not just in Asia, which may have been the case a couple of years ago. With every big new signing, more eyes are being drawn to the biggest sports promotion in Asia.

That was certainly the case with the latest big signing, Vitor Belfort. And if the signing of the former UFC champion didn’t create enough of a buzz on its own, the news that he’s planning on fighting Roy Jones Jr. in his ONE debut, has sent the buzz to the next level.

Jones Jr. is regarded as one of the greatest ever boxers to have ever lived and Belfort is a mixed martial arts legend. A clash between the two would be huge on its own but Belfort is hinting that it will be fought with a unique rule set that the ‘The Venom’ said would see two ‘different worlds collide in a way that’s fair and exciting!’

Speaking to Ariel on ‘The Ariel Helwani Show‘, Belfort spoke about signing for ONE Championship and a fight with Jones Jr..

“I am very happy with the deal and we are about to do something that never happened before. Right now we are negotiating with Roy Jones Jr.. We are putting on the biggest fight in combat sports between boxing and MMA in a way never done before.

“Roy is a legend of his sport, and he earned the opportunity to shepherd this new era of this sport and so do I in my sport. I couldn’t ask for a better way of putting this together. I believe this is going to be a natural intersection between boxing and the mixed martial arts world.

“We are going to be taking the best element of each. We are looking to be doing something that’s never been done before. And I believe we will create something new. I am really excited.

“We are looking to bring this to a country. I really believe this fight can be history in the combat sports just like George Foreman and Muhammad Ali when they went to Africa.

“I believe the settings we are agreeing to fight and if you can bring this to your country, we are going to make history. I am very proud to be able to accomplish this and be able to be one of those guys who has everything in our power to move ahead and do something that has never been done before.”
