Vitor Belfort Is Ready To Make His ‘Unique’ ONE Championship Debut

Vitor Belfort also known as ‘The Phenom’, announced his retirement from MMA in May 2018, after losing to Lyoto Machida at UFC 224. Almost a year later, the former UFC light heavyweight champion signed a contract with ONE Championship.

After overcoming two years of fight drought, the Brazilian finally felt ready to return. Admittedly having physical and emotional burnouts, Belfort is finally planned on making it happen. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the comeback has had to be put on hold.

Speaking MMA Junkie, Belfort expressed his eagerness to get inside the ONE Circle.

“So my agent has been talking to Chatri [Sityodtong] to finalise a fight, but then all of this came along,” Belfort stated. “It’s crazy. Everything is on hold, but I’m definitely looking forward to step back into action and bring something [new], reinvent myself again. I think that will be the last time and for sure, I’m excited to go back to action.”

Almost two years on from his last fight, Belfort feels in the perfect head space to compete again.

“I don’t want to be like my last four fights,” Belfort said. “I was fighting with injuries. I wasn’t happy. The situation is not what I wanted at the time, and I think now I kind of enjoy it. I was waiting for the moment, that thing to light up again. Everyone has their time. People get busy, people get complacent, and my thing is more that I didn’t want to fight out of need. I want to fight out of will, and I’m in the right place right now, at a place of happiness.”

Soon after signing with ONE Championship, Belfort hinted that he would compete in a boxing contest with Roy Jones Jr. And more recently, has stated that he wants to compete in a mixed ruleset contest, combining boxing and MMA. Whatever is next for ‘The Phenom’, he wants to get people’s attention.

“I’m interested in doing something out of the box. Everyone is doing something and people get burned out of fights. People don’t know what to watch, where to pay, what to pay attention to, but really what draws people are personalities. I’m really interested in bringing something that people makes people go, ‘Oh my God, where did that come from?….

“So that’s where me and ONE are coming together, trying to do something that’s really going to draw the attention and bring a unique product to the market place.”

Who would you like to see Vitor Belfort face in his ONE Championship debut?
