Yoel Romero Reportedly Out Of UFC Fort Lauderdale Main Event

Yoel Romero was scheduled to face Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the main event of UFC Fort Lauderdale. The two had previously faced each other, with Romero coming away with the win. The middleweight division is currently going through an interesting phase, and while Adesanya and Gastelum will fight for the number one contender’s spot, the winner of Romero – Jacare was expected to propel the winner once again into title discussion.

However, “The Soldier of God” has now pulled out of the main event due to pneumonia. That is according to Brazilian MMA outlet AgFight, who first reported about the fight being nixed just a couple of hours ago.

The two had earlier fought each other in 2015, and after a little controversy during the fight, Romero walked away with a split decision victory. Since then, Romero has fought current champion Robert Whittaker twice, losing the first fight by unanimous decision, and the second fight by split decision.

Jacare bounced back from his loss to Kelvin Gastelum with a massive win over former UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman at UFC 230. There have been no updates as to who might step in for Yoel Romero on such short notice.
