Javier Mendez On What’s Next For Daniel Cormier

Daniel Cormier will soon be turning 40, and as the former ‘champ-champ’ stated previously, he doesn’t intend to stick around for too long in the sport. While a fight with Brock Lesnar seemed to have been the most plausible scenario, things have changed over the past couple of months. Neither UFC nor the WWE Universal Champion have been itching to promote the fight.

With the uncertainty surrounding Daniel Cormier ‘s immediate future, AKA head coach Javier Mendez recently spoke to BJPenn.com about what the future has in store for the UFC Heavyweight Champion.

“I don’t know what is going to happen now. So many things have changed, the landscape, things that were unforeseen,” Mendez said. “Now, the retirement thing is going to be prolonged. I don’t know, one fight, two fight, three fights, who knows. The best scenario is for him to fight Brock Lesnar and finish. We will see what happens, it is hard to say.”

Mendez also said that he believed Cormier was done with the light heavyweight division.

“Yeah. For me, he is done with the light heavyweight division so I think he fights Brock.”

“For instance, my goal is to get Cain his title back after ‘DC’ vacates later this year. Once that is achieved I am onto the next one, then it will be Justin Willis’ opportunity.”
